Puerto Plata Real Estate
Puerto Plata is the main city on the North Coast of the Dominican
Republic with a population
of around 90,000. Price aren't
expensive here, as much of
the foreign buyers have so
far favoured the expat enclaves
around Sosua and Cabarete.
If you want to get involved in Dominican life, then living in
a working city sucg as Puerto
Plata has its advantages. Never
far from the beach, there is
the famous Malecon, a long
stretch of boulevard running
along Puerto Plata's generous
beachfront. There is a big
hotel resort at Playa Dorada,
just outside the city, and
more resort developments are
planned.
The name Puerto Plata means 'Silver Port' in Spanish. Opinions
vary on how the city got it's
name, and when in fact it was named.
It was founded around 1493-1496, possible by Bartholomew Columbus,
brother of Christopher
Columbus, who arrived there
in 1493. The 'silver' may be
due to a silver mist,
caused by a type of tree whose
leaves give a silvery glow
when seen from a distance,
whichwas known to hover over
the nearby mountain, Isabela
de Torres. Others believe it
came from the appearance
of thousands of shimmering
silver coins in the port's
waters at sunset.
